Winter Rehab Activities in Colorado

In some areas, winter conjures up imagery of short, gray days. But here in Boulder, Colorado, where we average 300 days of sun each year, we know the cold, overcast days are actually few and far between. More common are sunny, bluebird days that invite you outside for some much-needed “Rockies therapy.”

Spending time outside is good for just about anyone, but at Choice House, we see a range of lasting benefits. Being outdoors provides a space for healing and connection for those recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. At times, something as simple as a little physical exertion proves to be very effective at breaking out of circular thought processes to live more mindfully in the present. We believe in working the body to help quiet the mind.

Tucked into colorful Boulder, Colorado, Choice House is fortunate to have the great Rocky Mountains in our backyard, which offers some amazing opportunities to get outside for revitalizing fresh air and an abundance of soul-cleansing activities. Choice House guests log valuable time outdoors in both our residential treatment and intensive outpatient program.

During Colorado winters (which include lots of crisp, sunny days with just enough of the quiet, contemplative snow days), you can often find Choice House men participating in a number of sober winter activities including:

  • Heading to nearby Eldora Mountain (or Copper Mountain, Arapahoe Basin, Loveland, Keystone, Breckenridge, Vail; there are more than a few snow-sport destinations within easy reach) to experience the rush of downhill skiing and snowboarding
  • Visiting Rocky Mountain National Park to enjoy peaceful snowshoe treks in the trees or some heart-pumping cross-country skiing in rehab
  • Taking a trip to Estes Park to work on our cross-country skiing technique or join other sober friends for a scenic snowshoe hike in the woods

The outdoors does more than cleanse our souls; it also provides a space for us to connect with each other. Drug addiction and alcoholism isolate us from one another, and at Choice House, we’re committed to breaking this cycle of addiction and isolation. Before drug addiction many of us loved spending time outside with family and friends. Before addiction, we went skiing, snowboarding, hiking, golfing, fishing and all of the other amazing things our great state has to offer to us. Unfortunately, addiction often robs us of our pursuits and cherished moments in life.

Fortunately, Colorado winters are fickle. It’s fairly typical to be able to hike the Flatirons, play a round or two of disc golf, and hit a few golf balls one day, and then take in the quiet beauty of a fresh snowstorm a day or two later.

At Choice House, we know that winter doesn’t have to be dreary, and neither does your drug rehab experience. If you or someone you love is considering starting the rehab journey, give some thought to Choice House and sunny Boulder, Colorado, where the range of outdoor activities is virtually limitless.
